With songs like 'The Curra Road' and 'The Lark of Mayfield' Ger Wolfe has been steadily making a name for himself as one of the most respected singer/songwriters in this country. The Irish Times called him "An artist true to his roots"Last year the Cork's most prolific songwriter released his fifth album of original music "No Bird Sang" welcomed by the Irish Examiner as 'His finest work to date'. A busy man, having produced 4 other critically acclaimed albums over the previous decade-"Word and Rhyme"(1998), 'Ragged Ground'(2002), Heaven Paints...(2004) and 'The Velvet Earth'(2006) while also touring extensively both as a solo artist and with his band 'The New Skylarks'.
Ger's songs have a very broad appeal and have been covered by Fiona Kelleher, John Spillane,Karan Casey, North Cregg, DANU and Sharon Shannon.
Some of Ger's own recordings have featured on a number of compilations, including 'Other Voices-songs from a room' , "The Garden Sessions" and 'The Diamond Mountain Sessions.'
He spent spring 2009 as writer in residence in Gaeltacht Múscraí, collaborating with the older members of the community to produce a whole new body of work mainly in Irish, set for release on c.d. sometime this year.Ger is also a memeber of a New Musician's Collective "Music from Muskerry-Ceol ó Mhúscraí" based in Co. Cork.
His unique approach to the work of songwriting and being a musician is the subject of an hour long documentary set for airing later this year on RTE Radio 1.
Since last September Ger has been busily promoting "No Bird Sang".
Recorded and produced by the well known composer and musician Peadar O' Riada at his studio in Cúil Aodh, this latest offering is a collection of carefully honed songs about life in all it's colours. The album is now available on-line and in good independent record shops nationwide, distributed by Claddagh Records.
"No Bird Sang" sees Ger returning to the raw bare roots of his craft as a singer-songwriter.It was recorded live and what we hear is exactly as it happened in the studio in the winter and spring of 2008/09.While reminiscent of Ger's debut album 'Word and Rhyme' it shows how his style as a singer, writer and guitarist have developed over the years.
Songs of love and loss, of birth and death, moon and stars, all merge to create a magical soundscape, marking this out as one of the most honest albums to emerge in recent times.
